European Research Council (ERC)

The European Research Council is the premier European funding organization for excellent frontier research. It funds researchers of any nationality to run projects based across Europe.
The ERC’s mission is to encourage the highest quality research in Europe through competitive funding and to support investigator-driven frontier research across all fields, based on scientific excellence. It supports a bottom-up approach where investigators themselves define projects at the edge of current knowledge.

The work programme 2024 offers 3 individual grant schemes (supporting different phases in a researcher’s career), a collective grant and complementary funding :

  • Starting grant   : for promising early-career researchers with 2 to 7 years experience after PhD.
  • Consolidator grant   : for excellent researchers with 7 to 12 years experience after PhD.
  • Advanced grant   : for established research leaders with a recognized track record of recognized achievements in the last 10 years.
  • Synergy grant   : for 2 to max. 4 researchers working together and bringing different skills and resources to tackle ambitious research problems.
  • Proof of concept   : for ERC grantees to explore the innovation potential of their research results.
  • Public Engagement with Research Award   : for ERC grantees who successfully engage audiences outsides their domain with ERC-funded research.
